Our guest speaker, Philip Wang, Director General of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Commission, has been a fellow-Rotarian for 33 years and came to Puerto Rico with a delegation of seven representatives from Taiwan. Having served in some 15 prior positions supporting the business and cultural benefits of his country, he brings a wealth of experience to his present position. His academic credentials include a Bachelor degree from the Fu-Jen Catholic University and studies at the Foreign Service Institute. Mr. Wang's talk, entitled: "Taiwan: An Island of Innovation," gave evidence of the positive economic standing of his homeland in the world community. 23.5 million people on the 14,000 squares miles island, work with 200 industrial classes - many High-Tec. Ranked 30 in the world in per person capita (between Austria & Denmark), and #3 in foreign reserve, Taiwan is top trading partner. A mainstay of support for the US, it was interesting to know that the island boasts 76 Rotary Clubs and 10 Costco's Mr. Wang was introduced by our Vice President, Telin Fernandez. While living in Florida, Telin was a member of the Coral Gables Rotary Club, as is our guest speaker. |
