President Kenneth McGrath Message

Right after Hurricane Maria impacted Puerto Rico our club started providing assistance to the neediest communities throughout the island.  Members of our club have:  distributed food, and solar lights and charges, to the Hills Brothers community in San Juan;  helped Caimito with their cleanup effort as well as providing food, water filters, and personal items; distributed solar chargers, hosted a Thanksgiving Day lunch for over 100 residents, and repaired the roof of a community center in Cayey Sur; distributed food and personal items to the Alejandrino community; led the effort and coordinated the distribution of 55 tons (330,000 packets) of baby food to many other Rotary clubs and community based relief agencies and religious groups; and distributed kerosene lamps and baby food to Ciales and Villalba residents. During the holiday period we hosted over 500 youngsters at the 30th annual Thanksgiving Day lunch held at La Concha Hotel.   This past weekend we visited a community in Loiza to determine how best to help residents of an area that was flooded by the hurricane.  We have been fortunate to receive a substantial amount of financial support for the hurricane relief effort from other Rotary clubs throughout the US which will be used to continue supporting the neediest communities in Puerto Rico during the coming months.  I encourage all of our members to join in our continuing efforts to help Puerto Rico recover by identifying potential areas that need our help, and by joining our hurricane relief committee headed by Directors Bob Bolte and Gerry Cumpiano, as well as past president Ray Erb.

LAST WEEK

With the theme, Passionate about Youth, guest speaker, Sister Nancy Madden, Founding Director of P.E.C.E.S. (Program for Community Education through Commitment & Service) began her presentation with a video showing how the community of Punta Santiago in Humacao went from an intact physically established community before Hurricane Maria into a devastated area due to cyclonic forces that caused ocean flooding and severe damage to the drainage and, of course, the power facilities.  However, through the efforts of the workers and the young people that are served by P.E.C.E.S., efforts began immediately to bring order to the community that serves 7,000 lives in this Southwestern part of Puerto Rico. Sister Nancy's inspiration of her life is still the God of love, inclusive, transforming and inspiring everyone to serve and to be compassionate.  She thanked all who have helped with the restoration up to now while pointing out that resources are still very much needed.  Sister's email is: admin@proyectopecesing.org
