Save the Date

As we are all aware our club is celebrating its 100th anniversary of its founding in 1918 this year.  For more than a year a committee comprised of past presidents of our club has been meeting to plan for this year's celebration.  As I have mentioned during our lunch meetings Barry Rassin, President of Rotary International 2018-19, and his wife, will travel to Puerto Rico to join in the festivities which we now expect to hold on Saturday, August 4, 2018.  Mark that date on your calendar.  We have separated space at the Sheraton Hotel which will be the venue where we will celebrate our 100th anniversary with a gala black tie event.  I hope to see everyone there for the celebration.  Barry's theme for his presidency is "Be the Inspiration" which is particularly appropriate for our club this year given the dedication and effort that has been put forth by our members in helping Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria. This effort has not gone unnoticed as several Rotary club members from outside of Puerto Rico have traveled to attend our lunches with donations to aid in the relief effort.  Particularly noteworthy, the Ithaca Rotary club organized the production of the toddler/senior food valued at over $450,000 which we distributed throughout the island to the most needy young and old.  They were so pleased with our efforts that they have pledged an additional $9,000 for further relief projects that we will undertake in the future.  We should be very proud of the effort put forth be our club members and hope that everyone plans to attend our 100th celebration in August.

Ken

LAST WEEK

With Task Force Power Restoration as the topic, a team of three speakers from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, shared their diverse knowledge on multiple topics concerning Puerto Rico.

Headed by Restoration Deputy Commander Lt. Col. John Cunningham, assisted by Deputy Commander for the Antilles, Major Alex Walker and Chief of the Jacksonville District Regulatory Section Mr. Sindulfo Castillo, we were provided with a wealth of experience.  Their Mission Statement is to scope, coordinate, and execute interim repairs to sections of the electrical grid to allow temporary restoration until a comprehensive restoration of the overall power generation, transmission and distribution systems on Puerto Rico can be implemented, as directed by FEMA.

Task Force Power Restoration Priorities include (1) Safety--on the job & Public; (2) Partnered Mission Execution -get the lights on!; (3) Stewardship -  fiscal & contracting documentation;; (4) Transparency - tell the story to the Puerto Rican people, to their restoration partners and the US home-front; (5) Capture/Apply/Share lessons learned-be ready for the next event!

As expected, the presentation created plenty of participation in the Q & A period.
