Maestro Maximiano Valdes, Director of the Puerto Rico Symphony since 2010, was born in Santiago, Chile. After studies in Chile and Italy, he began assisting orchestra directors at the Teatro la Fenice in Venice. Maestro Valdes obtained a scholarship at the Tanglewood Festival under Leonard Bernstein, and then won several conducting competitions for young directors in Copenhagen, Florence and London. His talk revolved around the importance of the upcoming Casals Festival. The Festival is celebrating almost six decades and has brought much great music and recognition to Puerto Rico. We must all do our part to keep the spirit of the Casals Festival alive on our island. Thanks to Secretary Carmen Hammel for bringing us our guest speaker.
