This past weekend the president elect of Rotary International, Sam Owori, died unexpectedly in Texas. He was scheduled to visit San Juan next year to help celebrate our 100th anniversary of the founding of our club. We have send our condolences to his family. A fund to fight polio has been set up in his name since he was a great supporter of the effort to eliminate polio having served as a member of the International Polio Plus Committee. The 2017-18 nominating committee of RI will select a new president-elect, in addition to the president-nominee, during its scheduled meeting in early August.
Membership Committee Chairman, Enrique Sigas, will hold a meeting on August 1 at 11:15 AM in the AFDA Club. Will the following committee members please make plans to attend: Rafael Aponte, Ray Erb, Troy Fields, Norman Maldonado, Carlos Suarez and Marcos Vidal.
THE FOLLOWING CANDIDATE is being proposed for membership in the Rotary Club of San Juan: ARMAND PIQUE, Economist and Retired Professor. President of Arneri Natural Products Corp. Sponsored by Troy Fields.
Any objection must be in writing and received by the Secretary by July 30, 2017.
The final decision rests with the Board of Directors.
We heard from the 19 Community Service Projects proposals. Voting will take place at the August 1 meeting. Each member will get a list of projects and can circle up to three. Only one circle around any number chosen.
Votes will be tallied (including those received by email) and listed by the most votes won.
Also on the program was PDG & PP John Richardson who brought us up to date on the Souns project which began in 2011 and has grown to include many Rotary clubs around the world. It is a pre-school system that gives children a hands-to-mind approach by touching and familiarizing themselves with the letters of the alphabet.
More than 28,000 youngsters have been impacted with this Rotary Global Grant project over the past six years. Your club was a pioneer in sponsoring this successful partnership with Rotary International.
