Dear Rotarians, Next week is fellowship weekend! Yes, we will be received by Jorge and Pinky at their Cayey farmhouse from noon on. Michelle and Melissa are willing to provide transportation to ten passengers. Please indicate if you will need a ride by sending me a message at 787-415-8235. If some of you are willing to provide transportation using your own vehicle, please let us know. You are welcome to bring a guest or two, preferably a candidate for membership. Last Tuesday, we hosted a roundtable with Pepe Garcia, a passionate advocate for water safety in Puerto Rico. As an island community, we often overlook the critical issue of drowning prevention. Garcia, a household name in Rincón, highlighted the alarming statistics of ocean drownings on the island and stressed the urgent need for widespread swimming lessons and water safety education.
Garcia’s efforts go beyond awareness—he’s at the forefront of Rincón’s economic growth, where ocean sports and infrastructure have become vital to the region's development. “We’re hindering the island's potential. The government needs to take a more analytical approach to the ocean sports industry and conduct studies to support its growth across Puerto Rico,” he shared.
To make a tangible impact, Garcia is fundraising for a pilot project in Rincón to showcase the latest in lifeguarding techniques, alongside initiatives to train lifeguards and equip them with state-of-the-art tools.
He also emphasized the importance of the "blue economy," a term that refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth. Rincón is already living proof of this concept—just visit, and you’ll experience it firsthand!
