Hello, fellow Rotarians. Last week's invocation was delivered by Sal Nolfo. I requested that it be published in E-Garita for the benefit of those that could not attend the meeting, and of those that did and found that it enlightens Rotary's The Four Way Test, which gives us the rules to guide our lives: Delia INVOCATION By Sal Nolfo
Over the years, the tenets espoused in the 4-Way Test have been cited in various ways by many well-known people. Mark Twain, for example, said: “If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember anything.” Knute Rockne, one of the greatest football coaches of all time, told his players: "Win or lose, but do it fairly." On a more philosophical note, Buddha told us that “Goodwill toward all beings is the true religion.” Although not always present in the daily rituals of most Rotarians, I do appreciate the importance of internalizing the values promoted in the Rotary Code of Ethics and would like to offer the following verse as a prayer to have the fortitude to live by it each day. Is it the Truth? Now that’s a good start And is it Fair To all taking part? Will it build goodwill make us better friends? Is it a benefit To all in the end? If I can say “Yes” to this 4 question code Then I can be sure That I’m on the right road A simple test of 4 ways That guides me each day To do the right thing In all that I do, think or say. Amen. |
