On the last Wednesday of this month, March 29, the new Olive Garden restaurant near the Convention Center will help us raise funds for our club projects.

Here's how it works:

1. Go for dinner any time after 4pm on March 29th and bring lots of friends.

2. Order whatever you want at regular restaurant prices.

3. When you pay your check, include this coupon. Each check must have its own coupon, so print out as many as you need.

4. Olive Garden will pay our club 25% of all the money spent, not including tax and tips.

Spread the word!

LAST WEEK

Dr. Norman Maldonado, one of Puerto Rico's top Hematologists, former President of the University of Puerto Rico, Secretary of Health for San Juan, and President of San Juan Rotary, gave us insight on the present financial situation of UPR.  The system, which boasts a great number of distinguished alumni and enjoys a high rating nation-wise, has become a major focus of the Federal plan to seek remedy for our island's financial morass.  Our speaker gave a fact-filled overview of how the university gets its funding and somewhat byzantine method of how the annual low tuition of $1,600 is paid. It was interesting to learn, for example, that employees (active or retired) and their relatives, pay no tuition. Federal Pell Grants, Commonwealth funding, contributions from Casino earnings and horse racing, help finance the institution.  Now, with a huge cut in its financing looming, Norman emphasized that UPR has to transform itself as the university, of such importance to the people of Puerto Rico, must not disappear.  He is optimistic that a search for new leadership working together with several present university board members, will achieve financial stability in the long term.
Congratulations are in order as the Puerto Rico Senate recently passed a bill naming the Puerto Rico Medical Center's University Hospital after Dr. Maldonado, the only medical doctor to have held the post of UPR President.
