Dear Rotarians, Last Tuesday we had an unbiased introduction to climate change by author Donald Marx who donated several of his books to the club for fundraising . We hope you contribute to our service programs by acquiring one of the books when we next meet in person.
Past San Juan Rotary club president Jorge Gonzalez and past Rio Piedras club president Edna Seminario organized a fundraising activity at San Patricio Plaza on St. Patrick’s day. It was a huge success. Our thanks to these rotarians for their good work. Some pictures are included for you to enjoy.
On Tuesday the meeting will be by Zoom and our speaker for that day will be Edmundo Rodriguez, former owner of Nestor Reyes Inc. who will cover the topic : The Role of Custom Broker in Puerto Rico’s Economic Development. We hope to see many of you in this Zoom meeting. Yours in Rotary,
At our recent meeting, we had the privilege of hearing from Donald Marx Sr., who shared insights from his book Climate Bomb: Global Tragedy in the Making. His presentation provided a compelling and sobering overview of the rapid changes occurring across our planet. Mr. Marx emphasized concerns about the acceleration of climate impacts and stressed the urgent need for meaningful solutions—solutions that, as he noted, continue to be insufficiently addressed.
Key Issues Addressed
Rising Global Temperatures: Mr. Marx discussed the ongoing increase in worldwide temperatures and the consequences for both the environment and humanity.
Melting Glaciers and Sea Level Rise: He highlighted the alarming rates at which glaciers are melting, contributing to rising sea levels and associated risks.
Risks to Human Health and Ecosystems: The talk underscored the growing threats facing human health and critical ecosystems as a result of climate change.
Freshwater Scarcity and Ocean Acidification: Mr. Marx addressed the challenges of diminishing freshwater resources and the acidification of our oceans.
Impact on Agriculture: Particular attention was given to the effects of climate change on agricultural production, especially in regions near the equator.
His presentation left us with much to reflect on regarding both the scale of the issue and the shared responsibility we all have in shaping a more sustainable future.
