On behalf of the San Juan Rotary Club, I want to thank all for the attendance to the “Celebrated Women’s History Awards Luncheon”, on Tuesday, March 20, in which we recognized two distinguished ladies:  FR Christa Von Hillebrandt Andrade, Manager of the NOAA National Weather Service Caribbean and President of the Mayagüez Rotary Club; and Col. (Ret.) Michelle M. Hernández-Fraley, PhD.  Also, our appreciation to the members of the American Association of University Women who responded to the invitation of our DG Juanita Valentín-Morris. It was an unforgettable and fruitful meeting enjoyed by all.

ROTARY'S SOUNS PROJECT
 
BRENDA ERICKSON, Literacy Chair of Rotary District 6900, Georgia, gave an update on the SOUNS Project in Puerto Rico.  Reading readiness is happening.  She thanked San Juan Rotary for the support of the project and the logistical and emotion support we provide for this valuable work. To date, almost 1,000 teaches have been trained and 500 Head Start teachers are to be trained in the coming year.  Data from 2018 results with SOUNS in grant applications shows 91% of the 7,537 Head Start population met or exceeded national expectations.

CHRISTA VON HILLEBRANDT ANDRADE
 

Is the Manager of the NOAA National Weather Service Caribbean Tsunami Warning Program, Past Director of the PR Seismic Network and Researcher of the Geology Dept. of UPR, She is very active in education, outreach and training Christa is the current President of the Mayaguez Rotary Club AND daughter of our fellow-Rotarian, Fred von Hillebrandt.  She received her BS at the U of Delaware, was awarded a scholarship to Heidelberg University in Germany, and a Masters in Volcanology in the Esc. Politecnica Nacional.

COLONEL (Retired) MICHELLE M. HERNANDEZ DE FRALEY, Ph.D.
 
 Is the first female from Puerto Rico  to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Her years of service 1984-2014 saw her assigned to command headquarters from Panama to Bosnia to the National Capital Region.  Her service awards are numerous, given in appreciation for the Meritorious Services she performed in her assignments.  Holder of three Masters Degrees, and a Doctorate in Management in Organizational Leadership, Colonel (Ret) Fraley assumed duties as the Police Superintendent after almost three years as the Provost of the Puerto Rico Police Academy.  She is the Director, Selective Service System for the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
