Shielding Our Brain Health Through Lifestyle and Connection
This past Tuesday, our club enjoyed an engaging and thought-provoking presentation led by Rotarian Mr. Gerry Campiano, followed by fellow Rotarian Jorge González, who continued and concluded the discussion. Together, they shared insights on the SHIELD Plan, developed by neurologist Dr. Rudolph Tanzi, a preventive approach focused on preserving brain health and reducing the risk of cognitive decline, including Alzheimer’s disease.
The presentation emphasized six key lifestyle pillars represented by the acronym SHIELD: Sleep — getting 7–8 hours of quality rest; Handling Stress — learning to manage daily pressures; Interaction with Friends — highlighting the importance of social connection and the finding that loneliness can double the risk of Alzheimer’s disease; Exercise — maintaining physical activity; Learning New Things — continually challenging the brain; and Diet — adopting healthier eating habits to support cognitive wellness. The topic sparked excellent discussion among attendees, with many sharing reflections and personal experiences related to brain health, wellness, and healthy aging.
We also remind members that next week we will gather for our evening social at Tinto y Blanco. We look forward to another opportunity for fellowship and connection.
