Guest speaker, Dr. Ibrahim Perez, spoke on Health, Poverty and Economic Inequality. With 21 out of 64 countries with life expectancy below 60 years, Africa leads the world in poverty and inequality. Even having 42% of the world's wealth, the US has a high level of inequality. Hurricane Maria had a great effect on raising the poverty level in Puerto Rico. These huge differences lead to social unrest, political instability and even violence by those who cannot go up the economic ladder. Dr. Perez predicted that by 2050, the US will be 47% white, 29% Latino, 13% black and 9% Asian. The unequal statistics have to change to provide a healthier and economically equal society. Thanks to Speaker Chairman, Warwick Butler, for bringing us this interesting program. |
