Guest speaker, STEFAN LECHNER, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Antilles Fruit & Vegetable Corp, and a former member of our club, gave a concise and informative talk on Aquaponics, a sustainable method of food production combining aquaculture (raising aquatic animals) and hydroponics (cultivating plants in water). In this circulating system, fish waste acts as a natural fertilizer for plants, plants then take up those nutrients and return clean water to the fish. Perfect harmony! Aquaponics is especially valuable in areas where land and water aren't plentiful. Aquaponics is beneficial for everyone who wants to grow food and, it can be done just about anywhere that has access to clean water and energy. Our speaker then stressed the importance of Nitrogen as an essential nutrient for plant growth and it is abundant in a healthy aquaponics system. Top fish for best growth include Tilapia, Catfish, Koi, Goldfish & Tropical Fish. Several of the many plants that can be grown are green, red and other leafy lettuces, Chard, Basil, Mint, Watercress & Arugula. Adding potassium to the water triggers better results for tomatoes, Peppers, Cucumbers, beans, peas & squash. A most interesting topic about a system with little environmental impact to produce high-quality fish and vegetables.
San Juan Rotary has awarded a $1,200 grant to the AAUW of Puerto Rico to kick start a campaign to close the gender pay gap in Puerto. Closing this gap means greater financial security for Puerto Rico’s women and their families. The president of the AAUW of Puerto Rico, Betsy Parker (also a San Juan Rotarian) sees this partnership with Rotary as an effective way to work together on a common goal.
The San Juan Rotary grant will specifically help to publicize the free online salary negotiation course called Work Smart. AAUW is not just offering this seminar, it is avidly working to get 10 million U.S. women to take it during the next five years: AAUW of Puerto Rico wants 40,000 women in Puerto Rico to take the course. Grant funds will be used for social media advertising, seminars and promotional materials.
AAUW members in our club include Pat Schneider, Angela Schlump, Juanita Morris, Carmen Hammel, Jennifer Bates, Hallee Paterson, Russ Paterson and Gerry Cumpiano. For more information about this project, contact Ms. Parker at PuertoRicoStatePresident@gmail.com.
