President José M. (Pepito) Rivero-Olmedo-Message

“When you teach somebody how to read they have that for a lifetime.  Education can break the cycle of modern slavery.  Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy.
How Rotary makes help happen?  By empowering educators to inspire learning at all ages.  We share our knowledge and experience, offer scholarships, teachers training and other professionals who work with vulnerable populations.
SOUNS is a hands-on program introduced to classrooms over 5 years ago by Brenda Erickson from Rotary Club Peachtree City.  It is a simple, effective, user-friendly program to ease learners along the first steps to become effective readers, opening the doors to a literate future.  Children are first taught the sounds of the language, then through engaging activities, they are taught the symbols associated with the sounds (letters); then once enough sound-symbol associations are known, they are taught to build words (phonetic writing).  Once the learners are confident word builders (writers) they move naturally to blending symbols into words (phonetic reading).
SOUNS offer community literacy and Rotary member invest in the future by giving scholarships, monitoring and coaching teachers. Lets continue investing in our future.

Attorney Roberto Prats, former Senator and candidate for Resident Commissioner, Chairman of the U.S. Democratic Party in Puerto Rico, and a potential candidate for governor, gave a spirited talk on how our island can recover from our darkest hour due to social degeneration, migratory patterns and  financial obligations through our own extravagance  As an example, his gave some alarming statistics with respect to our children such as 61% from single families and 35,000 victims of child abuse. These children are our future but how can we expect progress with a generation so in crisis. Clearly putting the blame on our over dedication to politics, Speaker Prats said we must rise above political status and concentrate on the status of our young people.
