HELP FOR THE BAHAMAS

In response to President Gerry's appeal, San Juan Rotarians and guests pledged their collective financial help to support Rotary International's efforts to assist those who have suffered the devastating effects from Hurricane Dorian in the Bahamas.  Home of our Immediate Past President of Rotary International, Barry Rassin, there is a tremendous need to help reconstruct the lives and properties of Dorian's wrath.  If you want to help in the effort, please so advise Pat Schneider and she will bill your Rotary account with the amount you choose to give.  Our email is: rotaryclubofsanjuan@gmail.com AND our telephone is: (787) 342-6179

BANNERS WERE EXCHANGED

President Gerry and Rotary e-Club Puerto Rico & Las Americas, Mayra I. Rivero, PP, exchanged banners at last week's luncheon.  Incidentally, Mayra just happens to be the daughter of our Past President and Past District Governor, Jose "Pepito" Rivero Olmedo.
IN THE NEWS
August 27th speaker, UPR President, Dr. Jorge Haddock, was featured in the September 4th issue of The Weekly Journal, the newly minted English publication.
-LAST WEEK-

Our speaker, JON BORSCHOW, entrepreneur and philanthropist and Founder, Chairman & CEO, of the Foundation for Puerto Rico, spoke to us on the role of the third sector in increasing transparency and effectiveness in the Puerto Rican  government.  His major points were: Open government (the way to combat government mistrust); Transparency (shedding light on rules, plans and actions); Integrity; and Accountability.  As we have seen in recent weeks, inside dealings and cronyism have created a deep lost of trust in government. It is fair to say that transparency is a factor that is absent in the great majority of the processes and procedures carried out by the government.  We do have the benefit of the Federal judiciary and law enforcement agencies.  Our speaker made clear that a great deal of good is done in government by public servants, at all levels, who work very hard to provide the essential services

The hope is to involve citizens and civil society to develop and implement open government reforms.

The Q&A period generated a great amount of interest on a subject that touches on everyone - the need for confidence in good government...
