Rotary brought the world to Hamburg, Germany, from June 1st to 5th, 2019.  Over 25,000 Rotary members from 170 countries attended the 110th Annual International Convention.  This was Rotary’s first-ever convention in Hamburg.  Rotary members engaged in workshops and listened from world-class speakers.  Rotary brought together a global network of volunteer leaders dedicated to tackling the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges.  Germany’s 56,000 members and 1,100 clubs acted to make the world a better place at home and abroad.
Happy and safe return to our members who attended the International Convention.

The May 29th issue of "The Weekly Journal” featured our guest speaker on May 28, Pedro Rivera, who explained Blockchain Technology-Beyond Cryptocurrencies.  The full-page article appeared in the newly minted English language weekly Wednesday free newspaper published by El Vocero.

From 7AM to 8AM and from 6PM to 7PM Monday-Friday on WIPR 91.3 FM, featuring our own Sherman Wildman & Ricky Amon.  The history of English radio in Puerto Rico attracts an upscale audience, 90% of whom are bilingual, college educated and business owners and professionals.  For more information contact Sherman at (787) 755-9681.
DR. JOSE MANUEL SALDANA, an academic who served as President of UPR and a pro-statehood activist having testified before the UN Decolonization Committee in 2013.  He is also a columnist on the OP-ED pages of El Vocero.  His topic was "Populism: a movement that can be both of the left and of the right of the ideological spectrum."  He concentrated on populism of the left that criticizes globalization, markets, competition, capitalism in order to improve social conditions and reduce poverty.  The elite vs the people.  Lacking a coherent program for social change or economic reform, populist politicians' experiences in Latin America start deteriorating to total collapse where salaries and incomes are reduced considerably, capital flight becomes critical and inversion is totally stopped.  Dr. Saldana places the cause for the emergence of leftish regimes in Latin American countries on the low & deficient schooling. This neglect in education has been responsible for the lack of adequate skills of the human capital for the necessary productivity and national growth in the 21st century.  Our speaker predicted that November 2020 will be a turning point for Puerto Rico's status and for our democratic future.  It is time to seriously think about it.  Dr. Saldana's talk generated a lively Q&A period among Rotarians and their guests.
