The 100th Anniversary Gala committee is hard at work organizing the event to be held at the Sheraton Convention Center on August 4, 2018. Several follow Rotarians have already received commitments from organizations and individuals to advertise in the commemorative brochure in order to defray the cost of the event. We need everyone's help in identifying sponsors for the event as well as inviting friends and potential Rotarians to join in the celebration. Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 8 pm, San Juan Rotary will hold a Rotary Revelry at Barrachina Restaurant in Old San Juan. Barrachina will be offering several drinks at special prices plus appetizers. Invite your friends for the occasion. The best parking is in Dona Fela's but it would be a good idea to consider using Uber for door to door transportation.
RAFAEL RODRIGUEZ MERCADO, M.D., Secretary of Health for Puerto Rico, was introduced by fellow-Rotarian, Dr. Norman Maldonado. Dr. Rodriguez Mercado has held many positions i.e. Professor of Neurosurgery a the University of Puerto Rico, Secretary of Health & Human Resources, in addition to his professional work as a noted neurosurgeon. Our speaker gave a fact-filled presentation of our local health system, dating back to 1920. The 1960's and 70's saw a change in health care in Puerto Rico that now covers 69 hospitals and provides massive vaccinations. While Hurricane Maria was a setback for the island, Rafael said we have good friends in Washington DC which we need as he projected that it will take 15 years to get back to where we were before the storm.
