Guest Speaker, DR. YILDA FARRE RIGAU, Red Cross Community Volunteer Leader, will talk on "The American Red Cross in Puerto Rico: Who We Are, What We Do and When, Where and Why Do We Do It."
Following up on my email to all club members dated February 11,2021, I want to remind everybody that your donations to the Rotary foundation (TRF) support our efforts to serve our communities. Puerto Rico has been the recipient of millions of dollars in Grant Funding but, unfortunately, donations to TRF have not kept up with this increased demand.
The Board of the Rotary Club of San Juan encourages you to donate to TRF. You can donate on-line at Rotary.org using a credit card or call Pat and she can add it to your account.
Additionally, thanks to a very generous offer of one of our members, our Board is able to match all contributions made between today and March 31 with award points. That means that you will get double points towards your Paul Harris level. It is a great opportunity to level up. If you would like to know how many points you need to get to the next Paul Harris level, just contact Pat Schneider and she will let you know.
President, Chief Executive Officer & Director at Popular Bank (New York) and Chief Executive Officer for Banco Popular de Puerto Rico, IGNACIO ALVAREZ, was introduced by JORGE GONZALEZ. The two shared a law office in Miami some years back. Taking notice of Mr. Alvarez' work ethic, discipline and people skills, he was offered the position of head of Popular Bank in New York. Earthquakes, Hurricane Maria, and the pandemic happened on his watch. His talk was optimistic providing the local government takes advantage of the opportunities coming with increased funding. Our speaker noted that Banco Popular has 161 branches on the island, with 8,000 employees and $50 million in its Foundation. There were many participants in the Q & A period with concerns about spending the construction money carefully and without corruption. The question of the Control Board and a balanced budget so Puerto Rico will not be faced again with a fiscal problem in the future was discussed. They were just a few of the many concerns our speaker addressed. Rotarians thanked Mr. Alvarez for his insight and clarity.
