Fernando Llaveras, Executive Director of the Conservation Trust of Puerto Rico - the leading nature conservation and historic preservation organization on the island, and President of it's unit Para la Naturaleza, spoke on the human and ecological damage suffered with the passage of Hurricane Maria. Lack of planning, electricity, fuel, communications and adherence to building codes added to the havoc. Work has begun to replace the millions of trees that were lost (90% of our forests). Much of our costal coral reefs are dead. There is no doubt that we need a stronger habitat both for nature and humans. His organization is working towards that goal. Our speaker is also Vice Chair on the Board of Trustees of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, among other positions. With degrees from Dartmouth College and Harvard University, our speaker is a cattle and coffee farmer in Ciales where he lives with his wife and two children. |
