The upcoming gala will be an event commemorating 100 years of Rotary in Puerto Rico starting with the founding of the Rotary.Club of San Juan in 1918. We would like everyone in the club to participate in the event in some way. We need everyone's help in recruiting sponsors to help offset the costs involved in celebrating the event. We have designed a brochure with costs associated with various tiers of sponsorship which we will make have available shortly. Also, if you have an interesting story or event that you would like to share, we are working on a brochure which will be available at the gala detailing the most important events of our club's history, and Rotary in Puerto Rico, during the last 100 years. Please contact Jorge Gonzalez with any information that you may think would be interesting to our members and guests. Hopefully, everyone will attend the gala in share in the celebration of our 100th anniversary.
Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 8 pm, San Juan Rotary will hold a Rotary Revelry at Barrachina Restaurant in Old San Juan. Barrachina will be offering several drinks at special prices plus appetizers. Invite your friends for the occasion. The best parking is in Dona Fela's but it would be a good idea to consider using Uber for door to door transportation.
George Alvarez, from Top of the Week Rotary in Charlotte, NC, exchanged banners with President Ken. George looks forward to working on a project with our Hurricane Relief Committee.
CHRIS BRAND, President of Fodac (Friends of Disabled Adults & Children) and member of Stone Mountain, Georgia Rotary, demonstrated a backpack/water carrier. Chris is on the island helping FEMA distribute medical supplies.
Guest speaker, Adolfo Krans, Political Analyst and Commentator, gave a spirited talk as to why Puerto Rico's quest for the Presidential Vote should be a bi-political party endeavor. Calling the inability to vote for our leader an embarrassment and a violation or our civil rights, he strongly urges each of us to spread the word that it can be achieved even if It takes an amendment to the US Constitution. Which, by the way, was amended from time to time to grant Native Americans, Blacks and women, in that order, the right to vote. Many of our local leaders were and are in favor of extending the franchise, beginning with Luis Munoz Marin. Mr. Krans pointed out the irony of our ability to nominate candidates for president (national conventions) but not able to vote for our choices.
A UPR alumni, Army Veteran and with 55+ years in the insurance business, he is President of the Board of Trustees of the U of Central Del Caribe, which includes a School of Medicine and the first School of Chiropractic Medicine outside of the Continental US.
Cheers to Program Chair Warwick for another informative meeting.
