NEXT WEEK : Ms. Soammy Acevedo, Founder of The Super Heroes Foundation, an organization that is doing extraordinary work for young people with special needs, will be our guest speaker.
A gentle reminder of our first In Person meeting in more than a year will take place on April 25 at the AFDA club at our regular meeting time of 12:30 PM.
This meeting will be In Person Only. We will be allowed only 25 participants and those wanting to join us will need to make a reservation with Pat at rotaryclubofsanjuan@gmail.com.
There will be no speaker, but I am hoping that we can have a happy get together.
Our speaker, Amadeo Nazario, centered his talk on the Taino Culture, the most advanced culture of the Caribe. Before the arrival of the Spanish, there were 70 tribes in the area. The Taino’s were native to Puerto Rico or Borinquen, as they called the island. They were farmers, fishermen and hunters. Corn and yucca were two of their many crops which included plants still grown here. It is estimated that 17,000 natives were on the island when Columbus came. They occupied most of our present towns, were a clean people and had respect for the elderly. According to Mr. Nazario, the DNA of the average Puerto Rican is mostly Taino. White and black are less present. History shows that the Spanish used the natives as slaves and were very violent in killing them. It was said that they fed them alive to the dogs. Our speaker has a long career as general manager & producer at radio stations. UPR in Mayaguez is where he got his post graduate degree. He has given his scholarly presentation at the U of Chicago and Harvard. We thank Past President, Sherman Wildman, for inviting this most interesting and informative speaker.
