This week, I want to make a special recognition for Jorge Gonzalez.
He has been instrumental in helping resolve two major issues that are especially important to the club:
First, he has been and continues to be an exceptional help, solving unexpected legal issues arising from our project designed to bring drinking water to the homes of a barrio in Adjuntas.
He has also dedicated an amazing amount of energy and time to finding speakers for our weekly meetings.
Both of these activities are critical for the functioning and reputation of the club.
Our speaker, Dr. Ylda Farre Rigau, Red Cross Volunteer Leader in Puerto Rico since 2010, gave a comprehensive talk on the organization founded by a Swiss businessman, Henry Dumant in 1863. Clara Barton, an American nurse in the Civil War, founded the American Red Cross and led it for 23 years. In 1893, Manuel Fernandez Juncos brought the Red Cross to Puerto Rico until the American Red Cross was founded in 1917. Fittingly, Henry Dumant won the very first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. With its mission to prevent and alleviate human suffering in the face of emergencies by mobilizing the power of volunteers and the generosity of donors, the ARC puts its values to work with compassionate, collaborative, creative, credible, and committed service.
Dr. Farre, a retired UPR Professor, has visited many countries, including Venezuela, Mexico, Canada, Columbia, Panama & Cuba, to name a few. She is the winner of many volunteer awards and is a volunteer responder to hurricane disasters in Florida, Texas, and Puerto Rico. The bonding of volunteers and generous donors has made a great positive impact worldwide.
Thanks to Club Director, Carmen Hammel, for arranging for this informative program.
