Governor Fortuño, in February 2010, proclaimed February 20-26 and February 23 Rotary Week and Rotary Day in Puerto Rico. This year we will celebrate the week from February 21 to 27.
On Rotary Day, February 23 DG Mercedes and District 7000 are planning a car rally to celebrate.
The plan is to gather at the Convention Center, proceed past the Capitol Building and continue through Old San Juan.
For all those who wish to join this exciting event, it will start at 6:30PM with the organizing of the vehicles at the Convention Center and following that, the route will begin at 7:30PM.
It is estimated that the rally will take approximately one hour until the finish in Old San Juan.
PR Women in Construction: Women Build with Habitat for Humanity
As the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Puerto Rico for the last decade, Amanda Silva has shepherded the HFHPR from a small organization running one housing project to a mid-size organization with a 2 MM budget, which has been able to provide homes to close to 50 families.
Women Build is part of a new approach designed to recruit, educate, and empower women and teenagers interested in developing construction skills and techniques. These participants have the opportunity to contribute to the construction of the future homes for families in need of a house, all while sharing their talents and services for the benefit of society.
With the theme, "History of the Holidays: History of Valentine's Day", Director and Past President, Gerry Cumpiano, gave an interesting and enlightening overview of one of the most celebrated holidays that generates $14 billion annually in sales of flowers, cards, and gifts. We were serenaded by several members with traditional songs of love. Baritone Bruno Mazza sang a medley in Spanish and his native Italian. Then, Treasurer Luis Ramirez, sang a local popular song. Several members related stories of warm-hearted people they have encountered in life. Thanks go to Host Gerry and the participants for this unusual and change of pace Tuesday meeting.
