President Kenneth McGrath Message
During the past several months our club has had several speakers, including talks by club members, discussing relief efforts in Puerto Rico related to the hurricane.  The Relief Committee has been active in distributing a variety of goods to many of the neediest communities in Puerto Rico.  We have been very fortunate that many Rotary clubs in the US have sent donations of food, water filters and other goods, as well as a significant amount of money to support our relief efforts in the local communities.  These efforts will continue into the foreseeable future as we still have much work to do to help restore some semblance of normalcy in stricken communities.  We seek you help and assistance in these efforts.  Please let the Relief Committee members know that you would like to join in these efforts; In addition, our club is working on several global grants which will multiply the funds received by several times over.  We are looking for worthwhile projects.  If you have identified a need in a community located anywhere in Puerto Rico, please it to the attention committee so that it can be considered.

HURRICANE RELIEF

Rotarians Ken McGrath, Pepito Rivero and Bob Bolte are holding the banner representing the Hurricane Relief donation of 327,000 pouches of baby food sent to Puerto Rico by the Skojdt-Barret Company in Indianapolis, Indiana and Toronto, Canada.  With the help of several island Rotary Clubs, the pouches were distributed to children, with 45% going to the elderly.  The pouches, prepared by employees on their free time, is another indication of the generosity of our Stateside compatriots.
LAST WEEK

Robert Hemphill, Founder & CEO of Sunshine Solders of Encinitas, CA,  author of Saving the Caribbean, talk was entitled, Renewable Energy: The Puerto Rico Revolution."  He began with an overview of Prepa's pre-Maria history citing their bankruptcy status, debt defaulting, and unreliable, dangerous & incompetent service.  Their last official audit was in 2012 and their Annual Report in 2014.  He has set up power plants and systems all over the world, with a policy of no politics.  He stated the seven ways to make electricity, agreeing that nothing is perfect.  He was not impressed with one proposal, noting their management history is appalling and their assets worth very little.  Acknowledging that the solution won't be easy, Mr. Hemphill said it is time to stop the politics, placing blame, finger pointing, and island culture and face the daunting economic situation on the island.  He said, "It can be done."
