Guest Speaker, EDGARDO MALDONADO, Executive Director of SBP Puerto Rico, gave a fact-filled talk on how the organization shrinks time between disaster and recovery through five interventions: Rebuilding efficiently; Sharing their model with other organizations; Preparing home and business owners through resilience and training; Advising municipal and state officials; and Advocating for policy changes and improvements to the disaster. Hurricane Maria created thousands of displaced and suffering people. SBP has brought 135 families back home, to date. It has trained 120 organizations in disaster recovery's best practices with 1,500+ volunteers serving, resulting in $350,000 saved in labor costs. Eleven municipalities received help. Success through collaboration with such entities as Toyota, Walmart, Farmers Insurance and many more, aided in rebuilding. San Juan Rotary was proud to be part of the effort to have a positive effect on the destructive aftermath of Hurricane Maria. Thanks go to fellow-Rotarian, JAMES KENNEDY, who arranged for Tuesday's program. |
