President Kenneth McGrath Message

Fellow Rotarians,
As you are well aware our club will be celebrating its 100th Anniversary at a gala to be held on August 4, 2018 at the Sheraton Hotel.  This is a very special event and we would like everyone to attend.  The president of Rotary International, Barry Rassin, and his wife will be in attendance at the black tie celebration.  Since this is such a special event in the history of the club, and because we feel that every one of our Rotary club members should attend, our board has decided to charge every member a minimum of one ticket at the cost of $100.  The cost of the ticket is below the $125 price that will be charged for tickets to the activity.  We are also asking for all club members to support the activity by inviting friends, family, ex-Rotarians, and potential Rotarians to the gala.  The club needs your involvement and support to make this activity a success.  The gala will start with a cocktail reception with music, followed by a sit-down dinner with live entertainment throughout the evening.  This year we did not hold the Chili Sancocho Cookoff event which in the past carried a charge to each club member of $75, nor has there been any type of fundraiser where we asked for donations.  We hope to see every club member, with spouses at the activity to celebrate our 100 years of service to Puerto Rico.  I promise that it will be a very special evening.

THE ROTARY FOUNDATION RECOGNITION GALA

Will be held this year in a different way, but with the same purpose of recognizing the contributions of Rotarians to the Rotary Foundation, in a year where our District hopes to complete large impact projects that will be possible with the funds of this entity.  The President of the Rotary Foundation Committee in the District, PDG Paul Roman Correa, invites all Rotary members to register and participate in the Foundation Awards Gala on Sunday, April 15, 2018 from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm in the Zafra del Caribe Restaurant in Gurabo.

LAST WEEK

Guest speaker, Nancy Alicea-Cabrera, Program Officer for FEMA, was assigned as a Hurricane Maria Disaster Technical Monitor for the volunteer agencies leading and organizing repairs.  Puerto Rico is the pilot for the VALOR Program that provides construction supplies and hand tools to victims of the storm.  The program does not provide the labor force. FEMA will provide operational support to voluntary agencies in Puerto Rico to maximize their capacity to provide assistance.  Our speaker was born and raised in Bayamon and received her BBA in Accounting at UPR.  She has worked as a banking officer with both Banco Popular and Santander.  Ms. Alicea has many years of experience with the Federal government beginning with the Department of Agriculture.  If you want more information, she can be reached at: 540-247-7549

HURRICANE RELIEF FOR VIEQUES

Vickie Michaud, Founder & CEO for Hope Builders, Inc., a non-profit volunteer organization formed to help victims of Hurricane Maria in Vieques, accepted a $7,000. check from San Juan Rotary's Hurricane Relief Fund to be shared among six families to make repairs to their homes and replace destroyed furniture, kitchen cabinets and appliances.  Amounts of $500 to $1500 per family will be used for supplies and labor.  This project was researched and approved by our Club's Hurricane Relief Committee.

PROJECT VILLA SANTA IN LOIZA

A community whose home were flooded by the rains of Hurricane Maria, received 52 mattresses last Tuesday thanks to San Juan Rotary's Hurricane Relief Fund.  As the accompanying pictures show, it was a hands-on task for several of our committee members assisted by community helpers.  Thanks to Bob & Aida Bolte, Armand & Nereida Pique, and Gerry Cumpiano for overseeing the delivery of the much needed bedding. A major source of the funds available for such a project were donated to our Club by many Rotary Clubs and individuals in the United States.
