Our club has been very fortunate this year to have received numerous donations from over 100 Rotary Clubs throughout the US and Canada to help needy communities in Puerto Rico still struggling in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. The principal request from donors is to provide support to the ongoing relief efforts in Puerto Rico and help to the neediest communities overlooked by other relief agencies or governments. We have already disbursed over $40,000 to help the neediest of communities. Our Hurricane Relief Committee now needs your help and ideas to identify additional worthwhile projects. If you have any ideas or know of any projects that our club could support, please contact BobBolte,Gerry Cumpiano, Ray Erb or any of the board members.
Thursday, April 26, from 6 to 8 pm, San Juan Rotary will hold a Rotary Revelry at Barrachina Restaurant in Old San Juan. Barrachina will be offering several drinks at special prices plus appetizers. Invite your friends for the occasion. The best parking is in Dona Fela's but it would be a good idea to consider using Uber for door to door transportation.
Of the work our Club is doing to help the victims of Hurricane Maria, Rotary District 7000 presented President Ken McGrath with an award for outstanding service.
Guest Speaker, Amadeo Francis, has had a long and fruitful career in public service beginning when he answered the call of Teodoro Moscoso to be part of Puerto Rico's
"Mano de la Obra". Later on, he served as Deputy Secretary of State under Governor Hernandez Colon. Holder of degrees from IAU and the London School of Economics and UPR, Amadeo held championship titles in the 400-meter race and 400 meter hurdles, representing Puerto Rico in Helsinki in 1952 and Melbourne in 1956. His interest in developing programs for young people to become involved and pursue a career in sports saw him elected to the Governing Body of the International Amateur Athletics Federation. Amadeo shared many moments of his Olympic experiences with his fellow-Rotarians.
