Guest Speaker, IGNACIO ALVAREZ, is a businessman who has been at the helm of five different companies. Presently, he holds the position of President, Chief Executive Officer and Director at Popular Bank (New York) and Chief Executive Officer for Banco Popular de Puerto Rico.
During Rotary week in Puerto Rico and on Rotary Day we had a wonderful event: the Rally through Old San Juan with a stop at the Capitol Building.
We gathered on the side of the highway in front of the Convention Center where there was a short but very moving ceremony during which the order proclaiming Rotary week and Rotary Day signed by the then Governor Fortuño was read. At the capitol building we parked, got out of our cars, and were greeted by The Vice President of the House, Representative Varela and Senator Elizabeth Rosa.
Among the dignitaries present, there was a wonderful representation of Past District Governors including our own Juanita Morris and Pepito Rivero.
It was a complete success. My thanks to everyone in our club who participated.
Also, as part of our activities during Rotary Week, I want to thank Gerry for picking up our club’s street banner which was prepared for this event and displaying it for all who pass by to see.
Rotarians from all island clubs are flying banners urging and thanking people in Puerto Rico, for their good and the good of others, to get the Covid-19 Vaccine. San Juan Rotary's banner is located at 1469 Wilson Street, in the Condado, across the street from SuperMax. Board members and Past Presidents Gerry Cumpiano and José "Pepito" Rivero-Olmedo P.D.G., are pictured with the very colorful banner.
Antonio Morales, who brought the arts to the youngsters in the caserios and barrios through his project, Teatro por Amor, began his talk by thanking San Juan Rotary for all its help, financially and emotionally, over many years. Recently appointed Director of the Department of Arts and Culture for the City of San Juan, Antonio has ambitious goals for his new and greatly appreciated position. He said the arts saved his life and Rotary was a large part of it. Creating a library in Llorens Torres, sponsoring dance and theatre, to name just a few of the projects that helped kids make a difference in their lives. He will always remember those Rotarians who went the extra mile for the underserved young people, naming Bob Bolte, Gerry Cumpiano, Juanita Morris & John Richardson, in particular. A heart-warming narrative of a boy from public housing, becoming the head of a public service government agency.
